I’m not a huge meal prep person, but there are two things I usually make on Sunday’s: muffins and boiled eggs.

My husband and I have a muffin pretty much every morning with our coffee and the boiled eggs? They are probably the most versatile protein source you can prep! Grab some for a snack, throw them on a sandwich, or on top of a salad. Plus? SO freaking affordable!

How Boiled Eggs Are Good For You

As Registered Dietitian, I also know that eggs pack a super nutritious punch. They provide protein, like I said, which helps to keep us feeling full and satisfied after a meal or snack. Plus, the protein helps our muscles stay nice and strong.

They also pack so many other essential nutrients that out bodies need such as:

  • Choline: helps with muscle contraction, memory, and thinking
  • Vitamin A: an antioxidant important for eye health
  • Biotin: which helps the process of breaking down our foods

Is It OK To Eat Hard Boiled Eggs Every Day?

We used to think that eggs, which contain cholesterol, need to be limited. However, we are now re-thinking the impact that eggs have on our body’s cholesterol due to more recent research studying egg consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease.

Typically, having a couple hard boiled eggs per day is fine and not really anything to worry about. As always, though, it’s important to have variety in your diet, so I’d recommend avoiding using once source of food, like eggs, as a main component of your overall diet.

If you do eat, say, multiple eggs multiple times per day, or if you’re concerned, I’d recommend chatting with a dietitian 1:1 for more specific advice

How Do You Hard Boil Eggs So They Peel Easy?

Here are my tried-and-true trick for making the hard boiled eggs where the shells basically fall off is:

  • Use older eggs. I like to wait about 1 week after I buy eggs from the store before cooking them.
  • Vinegar. Add a splash of vinegar to the bottom of your air fryer basket. This will help the shells begin to break down and become easier to peel.
  • Baking soda. Add a dash of baking soda to that vinegar you added! Same thing, this helps the shells come off easily.
  • Peel the eggs under water. Grab yourself a medium to large sized bowl, submerge your eggs, and then crack them at the bottom of the bowl, just as you would on the counter. Gentle peel off the shell and be amazed at how easily it comes off!

How To Make Hard Boiled Eggs In The Air Fryer

There are two different ways you can make your air fryer boiled eggs: soft boiled or hard boiled. I’ll show you how to make both of these. But first, let’s learn what the difference is.

A soft boiled egg will have a cooked white, yet the yolk will remain runny inside. I like to use these for topping fried rice, a burger, or on a sandwich like a BLT bagel sandwich.

soft boiled air fryer boiled eggs

A hard boiled egg will be just that, hard cooked, meaning, no runny yolk. Air fryer hard boiled eggs are fabulous for straight snacking or making egg salad.

How To Make Soft Boiled Eggs In The Air Fryer

To make soft boiled eggs first you’re going to want to preheat your air fryer to 275 degrees if your air fryer requires pre-heating.

Then, once preheated, add about 1/4 cup of vinegar to the basket along with a sprinkling of baking soda (about 1/4 tsp).

Now, add in your eggs (ideally 1 week old) and cook for 8 minutes.

Once cooked, remove them from the air fryer basket and place into an ice bath to stop the cooking process.

How To Make Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs

To make your eggs hard boiled again, first you’re going to want to preheat your air fryer to 275 degrees if your air fryer requires pre-heating.

Once preheated, add about 1/4 cup of vinegar to the basket along with a sprinkling of baking soda (about 1/4 tsp). This is the same as if you’re making soft boiled eggs.

Now, add in your eggs (ideally 1 week old) and cook for 15 minutes.

Once cooked, remove them from the air fryer basket and place into an ice bath to stop the cooking process.

How Do You Peel Hard Boiled Eggs Without The Shell Sticking?

So, by now, if you’ve been following my directions, you’ve got some hard boiled eggs that hopefully were about a week old before cooking and have been cooked with a little vinegar and baking soda. The key to getting the shell off without it sticking is to peel the eggs under water.

First, be sure your eggs are fully cooled. Then, grab a medium sized bowl and fill it with room temperature water.

Next, take an egg and crack it gently on the inside of the bowl. You can roll it on the side a little bit so it cracks more. Then, gently peel it off.

When taking the shell off be sure that you’re getting under the thin membrane that connects the shell to the egg white. You should be able to see a thin film if you look closely. Get right under this and it should come off in one swoop!

Where To Store Boiled Eggs

You’re going to want to store your boiled eggs in the refrigerator. Do not let them sit out for longer than 2 hours.

How To Store Hard Boiled Eggs With The Shell On

If you’re going to keep your shell on the eggs, you can simply pop them in a bowl and place them in the fridge. If I do a large batch I’ll usually just put an “X” on them with a marker and place them back in the egg carton. This way it can save some space but I still know which eggs are fresh and which are cooked. These will keep for about 1 week.

How To Store Peeled Hard Boiled Eggs

The best way to store your peeled hard boiled eggs is to place them in a bowl of water and keep this bowl in the fridge. Ideally, try to change the water daily to keep them fresh. These will keep for about 5-7 days.

When Hard Boiled Eggs Turn Green

If you notice your hard boiled eggs turn green, don’t panic, this is usually normal. It’s the result of a chemical reaction happening between the nutrients within the eggs. It can also happen if your eggs are cooked a tad too long.

Why Do Boiled Eggs Smell?

Ugh, the smell! This happens because of the sulfur within the eggs. Typically the smell isn’t anything to worry about, just annoying. However, if your boiled eggs are more than 7 days old, the scent might be them going bad. If it’s super strong and it’s been close to a week, I’d recommend tossing them.

Can You Freeze Boiled Eggs?

Yes and no. You CAN freeze them, but they won’t be great. The egg whites will get rubbery, which, doesn’t make for a great eating experience. The yolks will be fine, however. So, if you need some cooked egg yolks in a jiffy, sure, keep some in the freezer! Although, I don’t think that will be a common theme. But who am I , I don’t know your life!
