Boiled eggs in just minutes that are SUPER easy to peel thanks to my secret trick! You can make these air fryer boiled eggs hard boiled, or keep the yolk runny for a perfect soft boiled egg. The choice is yours- both make a great protein rich snack or meal addition!
Why This Recipe Works
I’m not a huge meal prep person, but there are one thing I do like to prep for the week ahead on Sundays are these air fryer boiled egg. Having these on hand makes for quick, nourishing snacking and you can throw them on a salad or toast for a super fast lunch.
They also pack so many other essential nutrients that out bodies need such as:
- Choline: helps with muscle contraction, memory, and thinking
- Vitamin A: an antioxidant important for eye health
- Biotin: which helps the process of breaking down our foods
Ingredients Needed:
- Use older eggs. I like to wait about 1 week after I buy eggs from the store before cooking them.
- Vinegar. Add a splash of vinegar to the bottom of your air fryer basket. This will help the shells begin to break down and become easier to peel.
- Baking soda. Add a dash of baking soda to that vinegar you added! Same thing, this helps the shells come off easily.
How To Make These
There are two different ways you can make your air fryer boiled eggs: soft boiled or hard boiled. I’ll show you how to make both of these. But first, let’s learn what the difference is.
Air Fryer Soft Boiled Eggs
A soft boiled egg will have a cooked white, yet the yolk will remain runny inside. I like to use these for topping fried rice, a burger, or on a sandwich like a BLT bagel sandwich.
To make soft boiled eggs first you’re going to want to preheat your air fryer to 275 degrees if your air fryer requires pre-heating.
Then, once preheated, add about 1/4 cup of vinegar to the basket along with a sprinkling of baking soda (about 1/4 tsp).
Now, add in your eggs (ideally 1 week old) and cook for 8 minutes.
Once cooked, remove them from the air fryer basket and place into an ice bath to stop the cooking process.
Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs
A hard boiled egg will be just that, hard cooked, meaning, no runny yolk. Air fryer hard boiled eggs are fabulous for straight snacking or making egg salad.
To make your eggs hard boiled again, first you’re going to want to preheat your air fryer to 275 degrees if your air fryer requires pre-heating.
Once preheated, add about 1/4 cup of vinegar to the basket along with a sprinkling of baking soda (about 1/4 tsp). This is the same as if you’re making soft boiled eggs.
Now, add in your eggs (ideally 1 week old) and cook for 15 minutes.
Once cooked, remove them from the air fryer basket and place into an ice bath to stop the cooking process.
Recipe FAQs
We used to think that eggs, which contain cholesterol, need to be limited. However, we are now re-thinking the impact that eggs have on our body’s cholesterol due to more recent research studying egg consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease.
Typically, having a couple hard boiled eggs per day is fine and not really anything to worry about. As always, though, it’s important to have variety in your diet, so I’d recommend avoiding using once source of food, like eggs, as a main component of your overall diet.
If you do eat, say, multiple eggs multiple times per day, or if you’re concerned, I’d recommend chatting with a dietitian 1:1 for more specific advice
So, by now, if you’ve been following my directions, you’ve got some hard boiled eggs that hopefully were about a week old before cooking and have been cooked with a little vinegar and baking soda. The key to getting the shell off without it sticking is to peel the eggs under water.
First, be sure your eggs are fully cooled. Then, grab a medium sized bowl and fill it with room temperature water.
Next, take an egg and crack it gently on the inside of the bowl. You can roll it on the side a little bit so it cracks more. Then, gently peel it off.
When taking the shell off be sure that you’re getting under the thin membrane that connects the shell to the egg white. You should be able to see a thin film if you look closely. Get right under this and it should come off in one swoop!
You’re going to want to store your boiled eggs in the refrigerator. Do not let them sit out for longer than 2 hours.
How To Store WITH The Shell: If you’re going to keep your shell on the eggs, you can simply pop them in a bowl and place them in the fridge. If I do a large batch I’ll usually just put an “X” on them with a marker and place them back in the egg carton. This way it can save some space but I still know which eggs are fresh and which are cooked. These will keep for about 1 week.
How To Store WITHOUT The Shell: The best way to store your peeled hard boiled eggs is to place them in a bowl of water and keep this bowl in the fridge. Ideally, try to change the water daily to keep them fresh. These will keep for about 5-7 days.
If you notice your hard boiled eggs turn green, don’t panic, this is usually normal. It’s the result of a chemical reaction happening between the nutrients within the eggs. It can also happen if your eggs are cooked a tad too long.
Ugh, the smell! This happens because of the sulfur within the eggs. Typically the smell isn’t anything to worry about, just annoying. However, if your boiled eggs are more than 7 days old, the scent might be them going bad. If it’s super strong and it’s been close to a week, I’d recommend tossing them.
